Sustainability

In Conexión we understand the territory as our country’s socio-environmental heritage. Because of this, we are exhaustively working with teams in the field, to be able to embed ourselves in the territory in a harmonious way.

Our management model includes a Variants Committee made up of multidisciplinary teams whose main task is to identify relevant technical, environmental, and social findings. With this information, we evaluate the relevance of modifying the route of the line.

This new way of doing things empowers our teams to outline the layout flexibly, always with the environment and its social surroundings care as a priority. In addition, we have proposed to carry out comprehensive diagnoses throughout the entire Kimal-Lo Aguirre project cycle, from conceptual engineering, and alternative evaluation, to the future construction and operation stage, thus committing to a sustainable process for the territory and its communities.

Environment

At Conexión we understand the territory as a socio-environmental heritage of our country. For this, we are working exhaustively with the teams in the field, in order to insert ourselves in the territory in a harmonious way.

The environment and the social environment of the project have been the priority elements in defining the layout of our project. We have proposed to make comprehensive diagnoses throughout the entire Kimal-L Aguirre project cycle, from conceptual engineering, evaluation of alternatives, to the future construction and operation stage, thus committing to a process.

The work prior to the awarding of the bid incorporated social and technical variables in this definition, which has been refined through the collection of detailed information in the field that allowed us to make adjustments in certain sectors, focused on reducing and limiting the interventions of the project to what is indispensable in order to minimize environmental impacts to the greatest extent possible.

Precautionary
approach

We are a company that aims to protect the environment by identifying and preventively evaluating our impacts, in order to eliminate or mitigate them as much as possible.

A first instance of application of this approach is in the engineering design itself, including the evaluation of alternative solutions and/or locations in order to define the best possible project, both in its construction and in its operation during its useful life. Thus, the project, when submitted for evaluation by the environmental authority in the Environmental Impact Assessment System, has this precautionary approach from its conception.

Once the environmental permit to build and operate the project has been obtained, we will always maintain this approach, preventing deviations from occurring, detecting them in advance and applying control measures to prevent the possibility of harmful environmental effects.

Biodiversity

Commitment to Biodiversity

In Conexión we understand the importance of integrating all ecosystems to address climate change and the protection of biodiversity is one of our priorities in the development of our project. We understand that sustainable development considers the balance of environmental, social and economic variables, so the design and layout of our project has accepted, implemented and incorporated the guidelines required by the environmental authority in order to integrate into our project the most suitable and appropriate measures to take care of the environmental impacts in the execution of our project.

Climate Change

We lead, design and execute a project with absolute care for the environment, reducing the risks and possible effects that our activity may have on its immediate surroundings and as a direct commitment to face climate change.

Continuous current transmission lines present sustainability features unlike alternating current lines, as they are more efficient for the transmission of energy over long distances, which reduces the amount of energy that needs to be generated and, therefore, the environmental impacts associated with power generation. It also has a smaller footprint because it requires fewer cables for the same transmission capacity, and will work in conjunction with renewable energies.

On the other hand, Kimal Lo Aguirre will contribute to strengthening the Chilean electrical system by enabling the transmission of energy generated from renewable sources in the north of the country to the central electrical system. This will contribute to the process of closing coal-fired thermoelectric power plants, efficiently taking advantage of the potential of solar and wind energy, since it will connect them to the National Electric System. This will allow Chile to advance in the fight against climate change. The Project will contribute to a 30% reduction in the intensity of GHG emissions in 2030 with respect to 2007 – COP21 Commitment.

Field work

We consider field work as an essential activity in the application of the preventive approach, biodiversity protection, as well as for the knowledge of the communities and their territories, including indigenous communities, so the project has been defined and evaluated socio-environmentally under a rigorous work program in the field, aligned with current regulatory requirements, guidelines of the environmental authority and guidelines of public services with environmental competencies and best practices of international standards.
